response to boredom

instead of "how are you?" i've taken to asking servers and cashiers "what's been your favorite thing so far today?"

i loved the response and conversation that followed from a young man recently who said he'd just printed off designs for building his own custom guitar.

"inspired by STEM classes," he began, "i couldn't find a guitar exactly like i wanted and i'm bored, so why not build one with all the custom features in one instrument?"

firmly believing that a certain amount of boredom is a good thing, he got me thinking about what would be enjoyable to learn or do.

next time you're bored, what will your response be?
