the four loves

lately i've been thinking about compassion like a four-legged strong and balanced chair.  love of something Bigger than ourselves, ourselves, nature, and others.

these four loves work fluidly and in tandem with one another.  each supports the others.

for example, if someone says they love people but show disdain for creation, it makes me wonder...and how else to "love your neighbor as yourself" if you don't love yourself?

i don't have the answers for our current state of battling dualisms, but i do have a sneaking suspicion a start has to do with the four loves and i would agree with richard rohr here that it starts with working on ourselves.

the following post from the center for action and contemplation is one of the most refreshing things i've read lately.  don't get me wrong, starting with ourselves and being the good we want to see is hard core work!  but well worth it in my opinion.  enjoy...
