lorica
a lorica in Celtic tradition means "shield", a prayer for encircling and caim is Gaelic for protection/encompassing.
great spiritual awakenings can come from unexpected wilderness experiences when life does not go anything according to plan.
how might we practice "relentless optimism" with one another by sharing particular experiences in the midst of wandering in deserts not of our own choosing? to remember that Love is in this place even when we did not know it?
that this persistent, compassionate presence is always at work to offer an alternative narrative?
just as i literally wrap my arms around myself first thing each morning for a hug during these socially distanced times, i am going to challenge myself to write a lorica prayer, one that embraces very real corporate fears and invites shielding in all directions.
a lorica typically includes directions north, east, south, west as well as above, below, before, and behind (as in the famous prayers of St. Patrick). i imagine i will start with a list of honest, human fears and then make a list of their opposites, so as to glorify the protection aspect and not the fear.
i invite you to try the practice and share a link to your lorica prayer as well. stay tuned...
