kairos

not all moments in our day are created equally.  often the ones that are the loudest are actually least important and vice-versa.

both of my jobs are high-energy, multi-tasking roles filled with constant sights, sounds, needs, and motion.  it's a challenge to discern the most important priority and who or what to give my best energy and attention to at any given moment.

so i practice on nature.  i know that things like rainbows, leaves, sunrises & sunsets, spider webs, and owl or coyote calls don't last, so i stop.  listen.  no sooner do i look than the moment's over.

chronos (the minutes and measured time we use to schedule) keeps marching on.  but the moments (kairos) invite us to attend to them.  and i'm so glad.

just yesterday in the midst of relative chaos, i was prompted to listen to a young man share his thoughts and ideas; they were the cream that rose above the rest of the day.  i felt as though everything else was chaff compared to the weight of his wisdom and insight.  the messes and noises and other needs were still there but the one thing i took away from the day was that i was so grateful not to have missed that moment of listening to him.  and i very easily could have gotten caught up in cleaning and other tasks.  i went back to those, they are important, too.  but the window of opportunity had closed and lucky me to have witnessed him in that differently important kairos moment.

what moments or experiences have you had that seemed to transcend time?

  1. I love the concept of Kairos time. Thank you for this. I experience many of these moments in my life with a baby as an older mom. And I’m so grateful.
