writing exercise 2
here's another writing assignment my poetry pal and i played with: write a six-stanza poem with the same question repeated between stanzas.
Question: How does the sun warm them?
i hear a hummingbird but cannot see it
somewhere towards the tallest tree and out
of range
the crows in plain sight
how does the sun warm them?
it melts birdbath ice and
feathers in the bowl
blackbird statue on cement bowl that i sold
to her friend as a gift
how does the sun warm them?
with surprise that it can be so cold
and yet so brightly invigorating
a daffodil migration in the corner of my smile
rustling dead leaves of my heart
how does the sun warm them?
by being close enough to give life without scorching us
to death--too near and it would burn, too far and we
would freeze in place like
the statue
how does the sun warm them?
it just does
mysterious orb like love all-consuming yet
never consumed, energy source which needs
no replenishment
how does the sun warm them?
by sitting there, soaking it in
being in its line of sight doing nothing
but reflecting or absorbing each in turn
shadow-cast and slant
