nature's aviators

i watched a fascinating documentary on hummingbirds this week.  slow-motion cameras were able to capture not only their wing beats but color and habits up close.

because of their unique wing pattern, they can hover to collect nectar.  but, because this uses so much energy, they need lots of fuel!  this, like bees, is another example of reciprocal relationship between plants and animals in the natural world.

it inspired me to go out into the backyard where i am housesitting and refill the two hummingbird feeders with sugar water.  even though in summertime there are an abundance of blooms, my respect for their food source search went skyrocketing after learning more about them.  every bit helps!
