in praise of small things
i'm going to miss pennies.
small things add up. i suppose i can try to see the point of not making them any longer, but they are beautiful to me in their own way.
gone will be the days of paying with a twenty-dollar bill for something marked $19.99 and getting one back.
i still have some in my change jar in the cupboard, the shiniest of which i notice was minted in 2022.
it's not the actual coin i will miss so much, i realize, as much as the lack of them representing the end of an era; the idea of a penny and that it mattered.
perhaps i'm making too much of it, but that's how i feel. i was minted the same year as this image and at the risk of sounding "old", there you have it.
the copper glimmer, the way they catch light on the sidewalk. penny candy (though that was definitely before my time). yes, i'm going to miss pennies.
what small things do you have an affinity for?
